Geropsychology is the
Psychology
Of Ageing
The psychology of ageing delves into many
interesting aspects related mental health issues that begin in later
life. The science of the psychology of ageing has been dubbed
geropsychology. Many factors affect the psychology of ageing adults.
Factors Affecting Mental Health
In the later years in life people face
problems that can cause psychology problems. Grieving for friends and
loved ones who have died, caring for a disabled spouse or coping with
physical health issues can bring on depression or anxiety in older
people.
The psychology of ageing adults can also be
greatly affected by financial problems brought about by other problems
of ageing such as long term health care costs. Coping with severe
health problems associated with ageing such as incontinence, insomnia
and dementia can be extremely difficult for older adults.
How We Feel About Growing Older
The psychology of ageing also shows us how
different cultures see ageing in different ways with cultures such as
the North American culture being most noticeable in its embracement of
youth. In stark contrast, aboriginal people see in the elderly a
repository of wisdom as well as tradition and so the elderly are
revered and held in high regard in these cultures. So, there are very
differing views of how different cultures treat their aged.
Socialization and activity are necessary for
a good outlook on life in later years. Our culture tends to interact
less with our elderly, adding to the psychological problems of ageing
adults.
What Can We Do
Probably the best way to help older people
to cope with the special needs of an ageing body would be to spend time
with them. Don’t just drop by to cook them a meal, spend the
time to cook, stay, eat and visit. Help with the care of an ill spouse
they are responsible for to give them a break. Offer transportation to
medical appointments and help with expenses if you are able.
Proper medical care can spot the psychology
problems of ageing early. This could mean better psychological
treatment. There are medicines that can help with both physical and
psychological problems. Coordination between a medical care provider
and mental health provider would be the ideal situation for any older
person. We should value and enjoy the time we have with our ageing
loved ones. Patient and understanding support is what everyone
deserves. Remember that we all grow old.
